At RRHS a number of initiatives and partnerships have been undertaken to specifically improve student success rates:
School Success Plan
- Develop an effective tutoring system.
- Teacher-run tutorials every noon hour in all the main subject areas.
- Teacher-run tutorials after school.
- Senior students tutoring younger students for credit.
- Senior students tutoring younger students for pay, which is supplemented by the
- Students’ Council.
- Adult volunteers tutoring students.
- Pursue and develop our “Organization and Study Skills” program.
- Distribute an agenda to all students early in September to permit them to develop their skills as soon as possible in the year.
- Emphasize with the team of teachers the use of the agenda by the student as a positive tool for success.
- Identify students presenting difficulties with organizational skills and provide them with specific help and support through an individualized program.
- Organize the Secondary I and II classes so that they have smaller enrollments with core teachers (see Secondary I and II program). Maintain specialty teachers in Secondary IV and V.
- Provide a specific "encadrement" for at risk graduate students.
- Form a committee of Level V teachers to identify Level V students with failures in the main subjects after their first report card in November. These students would be considered “at risk” of not obtaining their High School Diploma in June.
- Develop a mentor system program where Level V teachers will be responsible for a few students and will follow them, on a regular basis, to provide academic guidelines.
- Follow the students at their second and third report card to help them be prepared for their final exams.
School Results
Richmond Regional High School has a history of being a very successful school, doing better than many schools in a similar economic environment. For the past several years, our students have performed better than the provincial average. We are proud of our students’ academic results and efforts, and with our annual Awards Evening and Graduation Ceremonies, we celebrate these achievements. During our Awards Evening, we recognize the hard work and dedication of our Secondary I - IV students, and at our Graduation Ceremony, graduating students are the recipients of 20 different awards/trophies and over 30 scholarships.
Successful Transitions (Elementary to High School)
RRHS receives students from three Elementary schools every year. Asbestos-Danville-Shipton students are from Asbestos, Danville and Victoriaville areas; St. Francis Elementary School students are from the Richmond, Melbourne and Windsor areas and Drummondville Elementary School students live in the Drummondville area.
To facilitate our Secondary I (grade 7) students’ integration at the High School, meetings and activities are organized and structured to facilitate communication between the students, their parents, the elementary schools and Richmond Regional High School.
Here is what we do:
- The Principal and the Staff Assistant visit the elementary schools to introduce themselves, present the school and answer questions. (January & February)
- Invite the grade 5 and 6 students and their parents to the High School for an information evening. (May)
L'Entente specifique sur la reussite scolaire de l'Estrie
This project (The Specific Agreement on School Success in the Eastern Townships), targets students who are at risk of not completing secondary school, and attempts to address their specific needs. The project's four key objectives are:
- To improve the reading and writing skills in order to have students experience more academic success.
- To implement a "Buddy System", where a senior student will be paired with a student at risk to act as a role model and to help the younger student develop better social skills.
- To provide students with an introduction to the world of work by giving them an on-the-job experience for one day (Job Shadowing).
- To improve the social skills of students who need to learn how to deal respectfully and effectively with people, especially those students who have been identified as "bullies" or "bullying victims".
