ELS ETSB Concordia Research Report April 2007

This report summarizes the results of a yearlong effort to integrate laptop computers among all the students and teachers in grade three of the Eastern Townships School Board. Pretest data were collected from Cycle One (Grade Two) students from ETSB elementary schools in the second year of project implementation (2004-2005). In year three (2005-2006), posttest data were collected from these same students, now in Cycle Two (Grade Three). The board provided trained personnel to administer the tests. AERA Literacy and Laptop research- “Laptops and Literacy” by Mark Warschauer

The last few decades have witnessed the greatest changes in the means of communication and production of knowledge since the printing press, via the development and diffusion of information and communication technologies (see discussion in Harnad, 1991). These technological changes have in turn enabled a new era of capitalism, termed post-industrialism or informationalism, and new forms of social interaction, encapsulated in the notion of a “network society” (Castells, 1996, p. 1). Maine’s Middle School Laptop Program: Creating Better Writers

Beginning in Fall 2002 the State of Maine, through the Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI), implemented a one-to-one middle school laptop program by providing all 7th and 8th grade students and their teachers with laptop computers, and providing schools and teachers with technical assistance and professional development for integrating laptop technology into their curriculum and instruction. Eastern Townships School Board announces exciting positive results from Laptop Initiative

Cowansville, December 14, 2005 - The Eastern Townships School Board’s Dennis McCullough Initiative-Enhanced Learning Strategy laptop project is in its third year of deployment and the impact of this technology on student achievement is remarkable! With more than 5600 laptops deployed, the initiative has increased student performance in reading and writing and reduced absenteeism and behavioral problems. Eastern Townships School Board reveals exciting preliminary research results for laptop initiative

Magog, January 14, 2005 – The Eastern Townships School Board’s innovative and exciting Enhanced Learning Strategy (ELS) is now in its second year of implementation and progress in academic performance is being noted.
