Crisis Controlled at Local Robotics Competition!!!
While the crisis in Fukushima Japan continues to unfold, students at Alexander Galt Regional High School showed on Friday that they have what it takes in the exciting world of robotics!
The A.G.R.H.S. Robotics club held their first annual in-house robotics competition based on the challenge proposed by their coaches, entitled “Crisis in Japan”. To be successful, teams had to build and program their own robots and have them independently navigate the “debris” left over from “explosions and flooding” at the “nuclear power plant”. Once the fully automated robots made it through the wreckage, they needed to dump a cup of “coolant” on the “melting fuel rods”! In reality, the robots were navigating a custom-made maze/obstacle course inside the Galt library.
About 50 enthusiastic students and parent cheered the teams on as they competed for some serious prizes. The winning team (the “Octagonal Prisms”) members Darius Valevicius and Matthew Rob each took home their very own Lego NXT 2.0 robotics kits. Also, Matthieu Hobbs Dostie took home the “Team Leadership” award of a $100 gift certificate to Robotshop.com for exemplifying great constructive enthusiasm, a team oriented approach, and above all else, perseverance.
