A NEW TEACHING ENVIRONMENT:
THE EASTERN TOWNSHIPS SCHOOL BOARD TAKES A SUCCESSFUL FIRST STEP

Magog, (Quebec) June 10, 2003 – The Eastern Townships School Board held its first media visit to two schools, yesterday, where students in grades 5 and 6 are equipped with portable wireless computers. Principals of Butler Elementary School in Bedford and Sherbrooke Elementary School in Sherbrooke confirmed that the past few weeks have been extraordinarily positive. “We’re deeply committed to this project – it’s already become a daily fact of life. Enthusiasm among students is so great that disciplinary problems are a thing of the past,” said the Butler Elementary School Principal.

The School Board has made a successful first step towards the creation of its new school environment, that is to provide each student, teacher and administrator from Grade 3 through the end of High School with a portable wireless computer.

Last April, 362 portable computers ( iBooks ) were distributed to students at Butler Elementary, Sherbrooke Elementary, and Cookshire Elementary Schools, as well as to students at Alexander Galt Regional High School in Lennoxville. iBooks were also given to 62 teachers and administrators.

The Director General of the Eastern Townships School Board, Mr. Ronald Canuel indicated: “We hope that the entire Eastern Townships joins us in this project, which will help our youth towards a better future. Our campaign for public and private partners has drawn substantial interest and Education Minister Pierre Reid is closely following the project’s development.”
