Iditarod Links for Teachers

- and there are lots!

There are, quite literally, thousands of Iditarod links out there. We have tried to sift through them and focus on sites that have extensive links. You will find the official Iditarod Race Site listed here, as well. If you have come across other sites that you feel should be added to our list, please contact us. We're trying to make our page as useful as possible.

This is the official site of the Iditarod Dog Sled Race and it's the place to go for all things Iditarod. This is a terrific resource. Check out the teachers’ section for lots of ideas from Diane Johnson, Iditarod’s Education Director, and from Jane Blaile, this year’s Teacher on the Trail. The Curriculum Challenge is another excellent source of creative Iditarod ideas for the classroom. Zuma’s Paw Prints is a wonderful doggy commentary for both the young and the young at heart. Students from past years’ Iditarod Projects check in to see what Zuma’s up to (now that’s an endorsement!). In addition, if you subscribe to the Insider, you’ll have access to a couple of hundred video clips on various Iditarod topics, virtual fly-bys of the trail, AND you’ll be able to watch the beginning and end of the race via live streaming! Be sure to check the musher listing and visit the musher’s personal web sites.

Check out Education Expedition. There are lots of great project ideas that can be adapted for older kids, and be sure to read Jon Little’s stories as the race approaches, and follow the race through his eyes. A musher himself, he gives the reader an inside look at what’s happening, moving beyond the facts to racing strategies, personalities, and personal struggles and successes. This year Cabela’s and Iditarod will be using the Iditarod site for race reporting, so be sure to go to Iditarod.com for up-to-date coverage.

This site belongs to the Resource Material and Technology Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. It’s got one of the best compilations of links that we’ve come across yet, with everything from literature resource links to Web quests. Well worth a visit!

Walter McKenzie is the guru of the electronic Iditarod. Take a look at his extensive links, and you can even sign up your class to take part in the Electronic Iditarod Project.

Yet another great site, this one with more general sled dog links that kids will find interesting. Many of the links take you to still more lists of links – who knew there was so much out there?

Some of the links from this site haven’t been updated for a while, but it’s got some great links, especially for the Klondike.

Lots of good links, including a link to one of the major organizations that opposes the Iditarod and other dog sled races. An opportunity to examine both sides of the issue….
