Essay Assignment for Jack London's

"To Build a Fire"

Writing Assignment for Groups 01 & 03

Your assignment is to write a literary essay on conflict in Jack London's story, "To Build a Fire". In this essay you should discuss the different kinds of conflicts that are used in the story and how the author used conflict to develop the plot. Support your points with examples. Your essay should be approximately 500 words in length. Please consult the rubric to guide your writing.

Here are a few helpful hints.

  • Be sure you understand what conflict is - consult your notes if you are in any way unsure. If you don't understand the topic, your essay will not be successful.
  • Before you start, make a chart outlining the kinds of conflicts and the corresponding examples from the story.
  • Make an outline. Think of yourself as a lawyer; make a point and then present the evidence. Most of the work in writing an essay is done in the outline stage where you do all your thinking and planning. A solid outline makes the writing a breeze!

If you have any questions about writing a literary essay, consult the guide.
