Knowlton Academy News

Dear Parents,

We would like to inform you of on-going developments and information regarding the school. Please read this letter carefully.

Spaghetti Supper:

I would like to thank you very much for coming and supporting our annual Spaghetti Supper. Again this year, because of your generosity, our students will be able to take part in all kinds of great activities! I also would like to say a special thank you to our incredible PPO for organizing this evening and to Café Floral for helping with the spaghetti sauce this year. These parents have worked so hard to make it work! Thank you also to all the other volunteers, parents, staff members and community members involved in this special event!

OPEN HOUSE:

The night of the Spaghetti Supper, students from Knowlton Academy showcased their school to parents and community members for them to see what our school has to offer. Through various media like Power Points, Internet, Posters, etc., the students presented their school to people interested. Thank you very much to Mrs. Harvey, Carolyn Janidlo and all the students who helped in this matter!

Citrus Sale:

The citrus fruit campaign is almost finished. The students brought back their forms on Friday, October 22nd and the fruits will be delivered the week of November 15th. If you have not returned your order yet, please bring it back to school. If you have not participated this year, we still need your form back since we track the numbers on each form. We will need volunteers to help us with the pick up of the fruits. If you are interested in helping, please call the school. It is too early to tell you how we did this year. We will inform you as soon as possible. Thank you to Judy Cowen, Brenda Scott and Joanne Croghan for their help with this campaign. All profits will help to support Year Trips and Activities.

Village Reads:

This wonderful project is an idea of Arlene McKellar and her husband from the Ding’s Garage. Nothing would have been possible without their precious help and support. Mrs. Stairs, a former teacher and Anne Stairs’s mother, came to give a training session to volunteers interested in helping with reading at school. The program started three weeks ago. Students and Volunteers are enjoying the time spent together reading books of all kinds. Donated money will help in purchasing books to support the program and encourage reading.

Academy Bistro:

The Bistro will be open to the public on Monday, November 8th. Don’t forget to come and buy your 10$ tickets in the office. Thank you to Debbie Brodie and Lynne Plouffe for the great things they accomplished with their students.

Homework Program:

We are pleased to announce that this program commenced October 12th, 2010.  We already have 30 students registered to this program and we have had to start a waiting list. If we can get 12 extra students, we might be able to open a third group. I am very pleased with the good work and leadership of Marta Gubert-Gomes and Josée Labrecque.

Noon Hour Activities:

I am finalizing a schedule with great bilingual activities for your children at lunch time.  The schedule of activity should be sent home beginning of next week and the noon hour program should start on November 8th to December 17th.

Knowlton Academy Web Site and email addresses:

I would like to thank Lynn McKelvey for his valuable time and effort in updating our information site.  It is up and running, and updated on a regular basis.  Please check it out on the ETSB web site! We now have 53% of parents interested in getting the newsletters electronically. Starting this week, the information going home will be sent via email to all the parents that gave their addresses. Now, you just have to make sure to read your email! Permission slips for trips and special activities will continue to go home in a paper version. Hopefully the electronic newsletter will allow us to save a lot of money. Thanks to all for your help in this matter!

Soccer:

Knowlton Academy’s students participated in the “C”, “B”, and “A” Soccer tournaments held at the Lions Park and at Massey-Vanier High School in the past two weeks. Our students showed great sportsmanship, had fun and came back with a plaque. Congratulations to all! Thank you to Nicolas Lemaître and all the parent volunteers!

X-Country Run:

Knowlton Academy students are running on a regular basis at lunch hour to get ready for the 2010 X-Country run. Make sure your children dress properly and that they have some good running shoes at school. Thank you to the teachers who are helping students in getting ready for this event!

Fire Practices:

The fire department invited two of our students to visit the fire station last Friday. Matthew Raymond and Abrean Mackenzie had a wonderful morning and lunch with the firemen. They came back with a bag of presents and pictures. They also received a certificate of participation. Thank you to Hugo Brière for this special day!

Emergency Procedures:

The K.A. Staff have been working hard on an updated security plan for Knowlton Academy. Your children will be practicing fire drills along with lockdown drills this year. These practices go along with the emergency plan and are to make sure we are ready to face any type of emergency at school. Please note that all doors are locked at all times with the exception of the main, front door. It is locked at 3:00 p.m.

P.P.Days:

Take note that November 1st, November 25th and 26th are Ped. Days.  Our daycare will be open with all kinds of great activities. Don’t forget to sign up.

Halloween:

October 29th will be a special day here at Knowlton Academy. A celebration in the gym will be held on the Halloween theme. In exchange of 1$, your children will be able to wear a Halloween costume or something other than their uniforms. The money raised will be sent to UNICEF. Thank you to all students for decorating the halls with Halloween sceneries! It looks beautiful!

Interim Report:  Don’t forget to look for this very important report that was issued last Friday, October 15th, 2010.  These interim reports must be signed by parents and returned to school as soon as possible.  1st term reports will be issued December 2nd.

Book Fair:

All week from October 25th to October 29th, classes will be visiting the Knowlton Academy Book Fair. This year, cheaper books will be available to students. We invite you to send money with your child if you would like him/her to get the opportunity to purchase a new book. Thank you for your support!

Photo Retakes:  The retakes will take place on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 at 8:30.

I wish you all a wonderful week. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Nathalie Chartrand
